Frequently Asked Questions
At what age can my child attend DCA?
Students applying for kindergarten must be 5 years old on or before September 1st of the entering year.
Are siblings of current DCA students guaranteed placement?
What criteria are used when making admissions decisions?
My child has been homeschooled. Does that mean that the parent should write the teacher reference letter?
No. In cases where students are coming to DCA from a homeschool environment, a personal reference from a non-relative adult who knows the student well will suffice.
Does the family pastoral reference need to be filled out by our head pastor? We go to a large church and our pastor doesn’t know us well.
No. Any church leader that has spiritual oversight for your family (such as an elder, small group leader, etc.) can complete this reference.
We aren’t Christians but don’t have issue with the Christian teachings at your school. Can we still be considered for admission?
We ask that at least both parents adhere to DCA’s Statement of Faith which can be found on page 9 of our Parent/Student Handbook. We are an intentional Christian community and require this of our faculty, staff, secondary students and applicant families.
Can we still apply if we identify as Christian but don’t attend church?
We expect active involvement in a local church by the faculty and families of DCA. With that in mind, we require a Family Pastoral Reference for all applicants. If a family wishes to apply but does not have a home church, we ask that they attend church, get involved, and then apply for admission.
Is DCA affiliated with a particular church or denomination?
My wife and I both work full-time outside our home. Would University-Model schooling work for us?
Is it possible to enroll in DCA mid-year?
In some cases, yes. Secondary students will be considered for January enrollment on a case-by-case basis.
Where do I obtain my student's books?
Book lists are available on the website under the “Elementary” and “Secondary” tabs, respectively. Most books can be purchased at amazon.com, christianbook.com, or at Mardel Christian stores. Used books may be purchased as long as the UPC’s match. In addition, DCA holds a used textbook sale in June.
Do students wear uniforms at DCA?
Yes. The dress code is intended to reflect the school’s stated aims to honor God and disciple students. The purpose of the uniform is to instill an attitude of attentiveness and respect towards the students’ studies, to encourage modesty, decency and propriety, to forge a distinctive school culture, and to de-emphasize the use of clothing as a significant means of establishing self-identity or gaining attention or social status. Uniforms must be purchased from Land’s End Uniforms or at the used uniform sales held on campus in June. Only the styles listed at Land’s End under DCA’s name are acceptable.
My child is entering DCA from a public/private/homeschool background. How will he transition to the University-Model structure?
We have new students every year. Most of our incoming students have not come from a University-Model® School. Orientation Day, which takes place the week before school starts, is vital to equip you in this endeavor. In addition, new families are matched with an experienced “mentor” parent who is available to answer questions and help you acclimate to Denton Calvary Academy. Our families are friendly and happy to answer any questions you may have. After all, we were all new families at one point!
